Who should attend?
Oncology nurses preparing for the ROCN™ certification exam or seeking to improve their knowledge of radiation oncology.
Learners Objectives:
By the end of this review course, participants will be able to:
1. Differentiate Radiation Modalities Explain the fundamental principles of radiation biology and physics, including the cellular response to radiation, and differentiate between treatment modalities (e.g., external beam radiation, brachytherapy, and systemic radiopharmaceuticals).
2. Identify Site-Specific Side Effects & Management Identify acute and late-term side effects of radiation therapy across diverse anatomical treatment sites, selecting evidence-based nursing interventions for effective symptom management.
3. Apply Radiation Safety & Protection Protocols Recall core radiation safety standards, including the principles of time, distance, and shielding, and outline correct nursing protocols for handling brachytherapy emergencies or radioactive spill exposures.
4. Recognize Radiation-Related Oncologic Emergencies Describe the clinical presentation, pathophysiological mechanisms, and immediate nursing interventions for common oncologic emergencies frequently encountered in radiation oncology (e.g., spinal cord compression, superior vena cava syndrome, and airway obstruction).
5. Analyze the ROCN™ Exam Blueprint & Testing Strategies Analyze the ONCC® ROCN™ test blueprint to identify personal clinical knowledge gaps and apply critical thinking strategies to analyze and successfully answer complex, scenario-based practice exam questions.
Accreditation Statement:
Lone Star Oncology is approved as a provider of nursing continuing professional development by Louisiana State Nurses Association - Approver, an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation. To receive 9.0 Nursing Continuing Professional Development Hours for this activity, the participant must: Register for the review course, complete the pretest/pre-course before the course, attend the entire presentation in person or virtually, and complete the post-test and evaluation to earn 9.0 NCPD credits by November 30, 2026.
