The End-of-Life Nursing Education Consortium (ELNEC) course is a nationally recognized training program designed to enhance the knowledge and skills of healthcare professionals in providing high-quality palliative and end-of-life care. This comprehensive course covers essential topics including symptom management, communication, ethical/legal considerations, cultural aspects, and care of patients with serious illness.

Learners Objectives:

Upon completion of this module:

1. The learner will be able to differentiate between hospice and primary palliative care services, including eligibility criteria, goals of care, and interprofessional team roles across the serious illness trajectory.
2. The learner will be able to formulate a comprehensive, evidence-based symptom management plan using both pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions for a patient experiencing pain and dyspnea.
3. The learner will be able to demonstrate active listening techniques and the SPIKES protocol when delivering difficult news or facilitating goals-of-care conversations with serious illness patients and family caregivers.
4. The learner will be able to analyze ethical dilemmas related to advance care planning, withdrawal of life-sustaining treatment, and surrogate decision-making using established nursing ethical frameworks.
5. The learner will be able to identify physical, psychological, and spiritual signs of the dying process to provide targeted comfort care during a patient's final days and hours.

Accreditation Statement: Lone Star Oncology is approved as a provider of nursing continuing professional development by the Louisiana State Nurses Association - Approver, an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation.  To receive 9.0 Nursing Continuing Professional Development Hours for this activity, the participant must: Register for the review course, complete the pretest/pre-course before the course, attend the entire presentation in person or virtually, and complete the post-test and evaluation to earn 9.0 NCPD credits by December 15th, 2026.
